Parties of Indians set fire to the prairies at different points ; the poor animals are driven to a gorge, or ravine, where are stationed another party of Indians, to shoot them down, or urge them over an immense precipice, where the fall is certain death. DESOLATE VALLEY, Near the Platte, as seen by day-break ; one of the dreariest scenes on the route, and a favourite haunt for bears and mountain sheep.
