Lewis passed some time at the Oxford Academy, but was educated chiefly in the common schools of his native place. He has always been engaged in agricul- tural pursuits, with the exception of some two years, when he kept an hotel in Oxford. In 1851 he occupied the position of Supervisor in his native town, and was chosen a Justice of the Peace in 1859. He was re-elected Supervisor in 1860, still holding the office, and was President of the Agricultural Society of Oxford and the adjoining towns i...n the same year. Pohtically he was always a staunch Whig as long as that party retained its organization, and then became a Republican, after having served a short time in the ranks of the American organization. He is a popular man at home, and sus- tains a respectable position as a member at Albany. Mr. Lewis has been twice married. His first wife was Miss Marietta, daughter of Simon Turner, and his second Miss Lydia, daughter of the late Capt. Lyman Smith. He is not a church member, but belongs to the First Universalist Society of Oxford.
