Undaunted, however, and determined not to return to Scotland, he consented to sleep upon deck, and accordingly embarked in the ship Swift, of New York, bound to Philadelphia, and landed at New- castle, Delaware, July 14, 1794, in the 28th year of his age. On his way, he shot a red-headed woodpecker, which he thought " the most beautiful bird he had ever beheld. " For some time after his arrival in America, he seems to have doubted to what employment he should devote himself. We find him within a year engaged as a copper-plate printer ; then as a weaver ; then moving to Shepherdstown, Virginia, and soon retui'n- ing to Pennsylvania ; then travelling in New Jersey, as a pedler ; then opening a school, near Frankford, Pennsylvania ; and soon removing to Milestown, where he remained for several years, both teaching and making himself master of those branches of learn- ing with which he was not before acquainted 90 ALEXANDER WILSON.
