A sad number of drunken men in the streets, a sadder number still of more sinful creatures, men and women, keeping sober to wile the money out of the pockets of the poor senseless fools, noise, confusion, and fighting ! No place for a lady is such a scene, you would think. But Miss Kobinson was there, passing by with a sigh the poor wretches lying drunk by the roadside, to earnestly entreat the more sensible to come out of the public-houses and go home quietly with the anxious mothers and wives... who had come to look after them. A great many did obey her wishes, carrying the money they had earned care- fully home in their pockets to buy comforts for the cottage or pleasures for the little ones, instead of throwing it all into that horrible clinking till at the public-house, and getting no good for it, only aching heads and smarting consciences. One of the recruits told a soldier of another regiment, with a certain pride, " That's Miss Robinson, the lady that OUR SOLDIERS AT PORTSMOUTH. 163 has been keeping we straight in our billets.
