About sunset we were joined by another trav- eler, a solitary Indian on horseback, followed by four ponies, all without loads. He had been to Pierce City with oats, and was now returning home on the reservation. The young man, mine host, seemed to know him well, and called him by his first and, possibly, only name. At first the Indian appeared to be uncommunicative, and did not care to converse with me. After ...a time the young man explained to him that I was a minister of the Gospel, and at the same time informed me that the Indian was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. After supper the Indian and myself found ourselves alone, and after giving me a look of more than ordinary interest, he said : "You a minister?" 150 Blazing the Way.

"What Church?" "The Methodist. " "Hugh !" Then, after a brief pause, he added, "The Methodists are a very good people. " This I interpreted to mean that he considered the Methodists would do very well, but were not so good as the Presbyterians, and I honored him for his loyalty.
