Data APPENDIX A - METHODS Observation The purpose of the observation phase was to get a feel for the life of the Common and to focus on the questions which would best inform the decision at hand - the Visitor Center - as well as the longer term programming and maintenance decisions. Typically, observation occurred over large blocks of time (approximately four hours) in order to see patterns of behavior, interaction and movement; recognize and distinguish familiar users or types of users; and study the changes in use and effects of environmental conditions over the course of the day (sun/shade, temperature).
