133 Brahms It might be interesting to see what the rabid anti- Brahmsites have to say about our subject. It is, perhaps, better not to draw from German sources, for Anti- there the strife was fiercest and the feeling Brahmsiie most unreasoningly bitter. But two choice Verdict bits are here appended, one from an English, and another from an American source. J. F. Runciman, an English critic, has this to say : — " He had not the intellect of an antelope, " yet in the next breath he speaks highly ...of Brahms' songs and many other works. Then he goes on to J. F. Say : " He had not a great matter to utter. Runciman If ever a musician was born a happy, care- less, romanticist, that musician was Brahms " ... " He assumed the pose and manner of a master telling us great things, and talked like a pompous dufifer. Brahms was not cast in the big mould, and he spent a good deal of his later time in pitying himself" (!!)... " Much of Brahms' music is bad and ugly music, dead music ; it is counterfeit, and not the true and perfect image of life indeed, and it should be buried or cre- mated at the earliest opportunity .
