It is credibly reported, that the day before, the wind be- ing at north-eaft, aftiffgale, the earl of Sandwich, with the other flag officers, being invited to an entertainment on board the duke of York's fhip, took the liberty, in the midft of the jollity, to fay, that the fleet was in danger of being furprized, as the wind then flood, and therefore, it was his opinion, they ought to weigh anchor and put out to fea: whereupon the duke, by a fudden reply, feeming to reflect on this caution of the earl's, as the effect of fear, it is faid, caufed in him a refentment, that was fuppofed to have been fatal in the fequel, (as we mall fee below, ) tho' the event fhews, this caution was the effecl: of h;s prudence, and not of his fear.
