It had come up like a weed, no man foreseeing it. It grew like a weed, no man tending it. And to all contemporary appearances it stopped like a weed when it had got its growth.
New Amsterdam became New York. New York, for a few months, changed hands and name again and became New Orange. Once more, and this time for good, the city took its present name.
