*' It is said also, that Virgil madeall 5' bis Ecloguesr in three years.
'* Therefore Cicero could not hear " an V one of them. But, in the " ongina...l, it is perfecit, tlutt is, he " perfected them, he made them «« fit to appear. Thus tliis Eclogue " might nave been prior to the Ti- " tyrus, and Cytheris might bave *' recited it in the presence of Ci- ** cero.** Catrou.
That the Tityrus was not the first of our auihor*s Eclogues, seems highly probable: but at the same time it is no less probable, that the Silenus was not written before it.
In the ninth Eclogue the poet promises to exalt Varus to the skies, which he has not performed any where but in this Eclogge.
