O So many negroes escaped that the slave-holders of the Southern States petitioned the government to remove the Seminoles beyond the Missis sippi. The Indians did not want to go. Florida was their home. Had they not a right to remain there ? "What right had the government to re move them ? Some of the chiefs agreed to go, but Osceola, the most pow erful of all, and most of the Indians, refused to _ M==5=======S======= _ leave their old homes and hunting-grounds. The Secretary of War sent Genera...l Thomson with troops to compel them to go, and war began. Osceola was wily. General Clinch was at Fort Drane, which Osceola was intending to capture. Major Dade, with one hundred and seventeen men, was sent from Tampa Bay to re-enforce him. Osceola watched his opportunity, fell upon Dade, and massacred all but four of the soldiers, who managed to escape and tell the woful tale. Os ceola stole upon General Thomson and five of his friends while they were at dinner and killed them. Through 1836 the war went on, the soldiers following the trails of Indians through the terrible swamps, rarely overtaking them ; the In dians, on the other hand, watching their opportunity to fall upon the soldiers.
