The Karens, and many of the hill tribes, have a much more jirimitive method of weaving. There is no loom. 'J'he two ends of the warp are fastened to anything convenient, and the loojjs in the middle are j)assed round a stick about I inch in diameter. The threads are arranged one by ime to the full breadth of the warp, which is usually about IH inches. 'J'he stick is fastened to the body of the weaver by a cord fastened to each end and going round tlie l.)ody. The weaver sits on the ground, and ...pulls one war)) tight towards her, and throws the shuttle through in the ordinary way. 'f'he process is very slow, })ut the cloth made is very thick and durable. From the point of view of art, the cotton fabrics, whether SITJv WEAVING 271 of Burma or the hill states, have not much to recommend them. The patterns are mostly stripes or checks, but the tints are usually skilfully blended.
