To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
47 old days little more than a mere collection of huts. Gaspar Balbi, who visited the place three hundred years ago, mentions nothing but the monasteries, " wooden houses gilded and adorned with delicate gardens after their custom, wherein their Talapoins, which are their Friers, dwell and look to the Pagod or Varella of Dogon." In those days, and for long after, it was in Talaing hands, and it was only in 1763 that the Burmans, under Alompra, took possession of the town and gave it its present... name of Rangoon. But the new name did not alter the character of the town. It remained the same collection of wattled bamboo shanties, on a marshy flat but little above the level of low tides, and intersected by narrow and irregular streets. At the beginning of the century, the town stretched along the bank for about a mile, and did not extend more than five hundred yards from the river. The official town was surrounded by a log- stockade, fortified by an indifferent kind of fosse spanned by a wooden bridge.
