The matches of Japan have practically ousted all others. Swedish matches for long outsold those of British manufacture; now they have had to give way to the boxes from the Land of the Rising Sun, with their countless vari- 278 RESOURCES AND TRADE ety of labels, collections of which are not unknown among the Burmese. These matches go in great quantities across the frontier, and the amount im- ported comes to a total value of over Rs. 600, 000. Possibly British manufacturers could not make them cheaply. They certainly make no attempt to catch or to lead the taste of the native purchasers.
