Captain Scraggs sent his crew out aboard the captured gunboat toassist Mr. Gibney in rowing his prisoners ashore, and whenfinally he stood alone beside the wreck of the brave old_Maggie_, piled up at last in the port of missing ships, something snapped within his breast and the big tears rolled inquick succession down his sun-tanned cheeks. The old hulk lookedpeculiarly pathetic as she lay there, listed over on her beamends. "She was a good old hulk, " said Mr. Gibney. "And now, as thespecial envoy of the Liberal army of Mexico, here's a draft onLos Angeles for five thousand bucks, Scraggsy, which constitutesthe balance due you on this here filibuster trip.
