The young men formed a line on each side, armed with sticks, except the first one, who held a knife in his hand.
When I began my march this one stopped my passage, and, seizing my left hand, cleft it open with his knife between the little NARRATIVE OF BRESSANI 125 finger and the ring finger, with such force and violence that I thought he would lay open my whole hand.
