To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Tabu. Nova Orbis, with the inscription Differt situs orhis Hy- drographorum ab eo quern Ptolomeus posuit; and no. 50. Tabula totius orbis, or Orbis Typus Universalis iuxta Hydrographorum Tra- ditionem exactissime depicta 1522. L. F., bearing the name AMERICA. On the back of map 28 there is an interesting account of Columbus and discovery of America, which ends: Toto itague, quod aiunt, aber- rant coelo qui hanc continentam Americam nuncupari contendunt, cum Americus multo post Columbum eandem t...erram adierit, nee cum Hispanis ille, sed cum Portugallensibus, ut suos merces commutaret, eo se contulit. This rare edition is not only remarkable on account of its maps of great American interest, but also because it was one of the prin- cipal pieces of evidence against Servet. In the text on the back of map 41 (Palestine) it is said that "Only by falsehood or mere boast- ing, has such excellence been ascribed to this land by the Bible and by Josephus, since experience shows it to be uncultivated, sterile, and lacking in all sweetness." In vain did Servet protest that these words had appeared in the edition of 1525, ten years before his own reprint was published: he was burnt by Calvin's friends for his impiety.
