*^* '* Among the ■ few modern books which are really scarce may perhaps be included the first edition of Mr. Frederick Locker's L]/ra Elegautiarum, a collectio...n of vera de Societe unique in its plan, complete, and put together with delicate judg- ment. The first edition was suppressed because it contained some of Lander's pieces. A fuller account of the matter is supplied by a note to a copy which was ' once the property of Mr. Francis Turner Palgrave, himself the editor of one of the most popular anthologies extant, the * Golden Treasury.' Mr. Palgrave's note on the verso of the fly-title is as follows : " ' First Edition : Suppressed at once in consequence of Mr.
