From this time the offices of Master of the Choristers and Organist were combined. The MS. Parts of a Service by him in F are in the possession of Mr. J. S. Bumpus. The Survey of Houses in the Cathedral Close, July, 1649, includes the following : "A Howse in the possession of one Mr. Silver, formerly Organist of the Cathedrall Church, and did hold the same in right of his place. The said Howse consistinge of three chambers and three small roomes, all above staires, valued at Forty Shillings p. ...Ann. (&c. ) " From this it would appear that John Silver had also been Organist before the period of the Rebellion. Probably he undertook the duties of this office from the time Gibbons joined the Royalist Army until the Cathedral Services were suspended in the Autumn of 1645.
