Hillyer subsequently added $5000 to his original gift. It was a small sum for such an object, and the closest economy was necessary in its expenditure, but it was much the largest gift thus far which had been received, and it was a great encouragement, as evidence that the college was beginning to secure the generous sympathy of intelligent men.
