The demands of the Navy and Army illustrate this need, but the demands of the industries of the country are not less urgent. It is not to be expected or desired that all pupils should acquire the same sort of skill. On the con- trary, variety among the pupils is highly desirable, but it is indis- pensable that every pupil should acquire some skill. Every girl should learn to sew and to cook, and every boy should learn, when he is strong enough, to use the tools of the carpenter, a mason, and a plumber.
