Joseph Spencer's regiment raised on the first call for troops by the legisla- ture of Connecticut, April-May, 1775; marched by companies to the camps around Boston and took post at Roxbury; served during the siege until expiration of term of service, December, 1775. Oliver Chapin was born April 9, 1757. He wa> in ...the French and Indian War. He died in Sheffield. Mass., on his return home, December 1, 1758, aged 21 years. Oliver Chapin of Mendon, Mass., was one of Washington's Life Guard in 1778. It consisted of a major's command, one hundred and eighty men. On the 30th of April, 1777, Washington, while at Morristown, N. J., organized anew his Life Guard, and issued orders to the colonels of the regiments stationed there to furnish him with four men from each of their commands, request- ing that the men .should look well and be nearly 15 of a size, none to exceed in stature five feet ten inches, nor fall short of five feet nine inches; that they should be sober, young, active, and well made, of good character in the regiment, and should appear clean and soldier-like, adding, " Send me none but natives." Their uniform consisted of a blue coat with white facings; white waistcoat and breeches ; black stock and black half-gaiters, and a round or a cocked hat with blue and white feather.
