Webster, was patiently endured, in the desire to stand all the more firmly by the cause of freedom, now dearer than ever because more than ever imperilled by the faithlessness of its friends.
Of the controversy which followed between Judge Allen and Mr. Webster it is, perhaps, needless to speak. I believed at the time, as I still do, that Judge Allen was right in the charges made by him against Mr. Webster, in March, 1851 ; and I was willing, therefore, to offer in the House a preamble and reso...lu- tions calling for an investigation. The House, then in the complete control of men who had surrendered the country to the keeping of the slave power, very naturally voted down the pro- posed inquiry. It was never officially made ; but Judge Allen's good name suffered no detriment in the judgment of his country- men by reason of his charges. On the contrary, I think it safe to say that the general verdict has been in his favor. Time has awarded justice to both parties, and this is all that the friends of Judge Allen could ask.
