Bellaigue an " accompaniment." It is easy to understand why the latter has not a great liking for ^^the well-tempered pianoforte^^^ as he con- siders the introductory chorus of the Passion particularly grim and repelling, and. that Bach, " who had science and not love," is as weari- some as grammar.... But he is inclined to be indulgent to the " old organist," as he calls him, and to forgive him for not investing a simple piano study with the fascination so freely im- parted to M. Massenet's religious compositions.
If the reader is incredulous, let him consult the Revue des Deux Mondes of September 15th, 1887. As to M. Bellaigue, let him ask Gounod to explain Bach to him, and the Maestro's eloquence will make him understand the composer of whom he says : " The whole of music is in that man." He will then proceed to tell him that in the ingenious idea of utilizing the first prelude as accompaniment to a rehgious melody, there was no irreverent intention of correcting or improving the " Master of Masters." Gounod, I am sure, would rather tear up this fine composition with Digitized by VjOOQIC 1 90 Life of Gounod.
