To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Corrosion of the SO2 treated glasses was conducted in triple distilled H2O at 100°C. No attempt was made to control the pH of the solution during the corrosion pro- cess. The Si concentration was monitored as a function of corrosion time and various SOo treatments and plotted in Figure 80. There was a large reduction in Si dis- solution for the glasses with SO2 treatments compared with that observed for non-S02 treated glass with a freshly abraded glass surface. From solution analysis, it is ob...vious that the 5 minute SOo treatment has the greatest effect on chemical durability with the 30 minute SO2 treatment having less effect on improving durability. This reduction in Si dissolution may be attributed to the silica rich layer formed on the glass surface during the SO2 treatment process. Infrared reflection spectroscopy (IRRS) spectra for the non-treated LS-33 glass is shown in Figure 81. There is a rapid increase in the Si-O-Si stretch peak (-^1080 cm ) after 3 hours of corrosion, which decreases there- after for 3 days, 7 days and finally reaches a minimum in spectral intensity after 14 days.
