Pure alumina has a similar affinity for water, and the union is so intimate that it is almost impossible ever to separate the water with which it has been united. Saussure, who made experiments on this subject, declares that this earth has so powerful an at- traction for water, that it will retain a tenth of its weight of that fluid, even though it be submitted to a heat that will fuse iron.

Seeing then that water has so great an affinity for many bodies, and that it imparts transparency to one and hardness to another, it is surely worth while to examine whether it may not fulfil an important office in some mechanical and manufacturing pro- cesses in which its operation has been least suspected.
