Cloth which has been galled or samached exercises a greater affinity for the alumina mordant than cloth which has not been so treated, and the OIL AS A MORDANT. 299 combined galled and alumed cloth has a decidedly stronger affinity for colours than the cloth alumed ...without the galls. This is the real degree to which the astringent matters act as mordants. Picric acid upon woollen and silk seems to act the part of a mordant besides being a colouring matter ; experiments appeared to demonstrate that wool which had been prepared with picric acid had a greater affinity for colouring matters than wool not treated, but it was not much, and the effects might be really owing to the colouring matter of the picric acid.
OU. — The use of oils as assisting cloth to absorb and retain colouring matters is of very ancient origin.
