Peters, who was the chairman of the city council, got a job as the new town’s first police chief.He held the job until 1927 or ‘28, then he was killed with a shotgun by a man who was in a malarial delirium and mistook him for someone else. He died at the doctor’s office, in my grandmother’s arms.This story stayed with me, and later, other events occurred in my hometown that stayed with me, too, and eventually, I began to shape these events into an idea for a novel.
