Meanwhile the Twenty-first brigade, with the headquarters, moved out of Tungchow at 3:30 a. m. — the Forty-second regiment forming the main body — and maxched without halting to a position 1,200 or 1,300 meters from the Tse-hwa gate.
"The enemy were ranged on the walls in fighting order, and they opened a rifle fire on the advancing Japanese troops, who pushed on gradually, however, finding cover in the houses on either side of the road. On approaching the gate they found the walls and towers i...ntact and so high that to scale them was quite out of the question. Moreover, the system of defense was very complete, so that troops advancing to attack the gate would find themselves exposed to flank and rear fire from the adjacent parapets. On the other hand, unless the gates were quickly forced and an entry effected, the troops pushing up from the rear to the attack would find themselves in a species of well with bul- lets pouring down on them from overhead. Lieutenant Yasaki, with a detachment of the First company, and Captain Minamiyama, with the whole of the Tenth company, attempted to force the gate, but failed.
