That he overstates the influence of Bushido is probable. For instance, the high morality it inculcates is certainly not ob- served in at least two most important departments of life. Dr. Griffis, the brilliant American author of several books on Japan, who knows the people intimately and admires them greatly, gives sad pictures of their social life as it was forty years 60 CHRISTIAN MISSIONS IN THE FAR EAST.
