How do we account for its wide-spread existence, and among bodies that hold no communion with each other? It was not born of Popery, for churches that anathematize the Pope hold it, and churches that were planted before Popery arose, and churches that for long ages have been secluded from Rome and the Christian world, have had Episco- pacy. If it were an arrogant assumption growing with the growth of corruption, why were there anciently no loud protests against it ? Gross errors in other cases ...were resisted step by step. But among orthodox and heretics Episcopacy was adopted, with no clamor against it, when naturally Presbyters, if reduced from an equal- ity to a state of inferiority, would have pleaded loudly against the encroachment. The inference would seem to be that Episcopacy was of Christ's appointment — instituted by him by an easy change, as in many other cases, from the Jewish three-fold ministry — set in order during those forty days in which he remained on earth to speak to his Apostles of the tilings pertaining to his kingdom, followed by them as appears from many traces in planting churches, and so passing into general use, like the admission of females to the Lord's Supper, and the keeping of the Lord's Day, without resistance or Digitized by VjOOQlC 70 CHURCH UNITY.
