" The first record of a church choir appeared in 1771, when the White Haven Church voted "that those persons who are singers in the congregation be desired to sit m the gallery together. In 1794, the First Ecclesiastical Society appropriated nine pounds for promoting instruc- tion in singing conditioned on the other ecclesiastical societies doing the same.

Singing schools became the chief social dissipation, and the gallery entered on its career as a rival of the pulpit for the principal honors of the service. As the choir developed in numbers and skill it naturally became more aspiring.
