Said diary is even more interesting than the one kept and published by Gaspar de Villagra because it relates the occurrences and incidents of the whole journey, giving the altitude at each camping place until San Juan was reached. It describes the manner the first settlement was made and how the first church was built at San Juan, establishing beyond the possibility of a doubt that the first settlement in New Mexico was made on the east side of UNEDITED DOCUMENTS OP THE INDIES 103 the Rio Grande and that the first church was built at $an Juan, thus cbrroborating what Oiiate and Villagra state as narrated in my "Illustrated History of New Mexico.
