In 1850 lie was again nominated and was elected. The distinguisliing act that has marked Gov. Keid's career has been his successful advocacy of the caus...e of free suffrage. In 1854 he was elected to the United States Senate, where he is still a member in 1858.

Gen. Charles McDowell died . . . March 31st. Gen. John Steele died .... Aug. 14.
Gen. Steele, after holding several high and responsi- ble offices under Gen. Washington and John Adams's administration, was, on the 14th day of August, 1815 (the day of his death), elected to the House of Commons.
