What reading level is City of Bones book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
"You can go inside my head, " she said, "but only when I'm ready. " If you do not want our help, there is no need for this. You are the one who asked for our assistance, after all. "You want to know what's in my mind, just like I do, " she said. "That doesn't mean you can't be careful about it. " The Brother who sat in the center seat templed his thin white fingers beneath his chin, itis an interesting puzzle, admittedly, he said, and the voice inside her mind was dry and neutral. But there is ...no need for the use of force, if you do not resist. She gritted her teeth. She wanted to resist them, wanted to pry those intrusive voices out of her head. To stand by and allow such a violation of her most intimate, personal self- But there was every chance that had already happened, she reminded herself. This was nothing more than the excavation of a past crime, the theft of her memory. If it worked, what had been taken from her would be restored. She closed her eyes. "Go ahead, " she said. The first contact came as a whisper inside her head, delicate as the brush of a falling leaf.

I can't go on. The characters are intolerable, the dialogue is ridiculous, and the plot makes no sense whatsoever. It's like a bad fan fiction. I'd rather read the rest of the Twilight Saga than even one chapter more of this.

Or..... You'd be better off borrowing/buying the books; they're much more reliable. These could have grammar mistakes and such, but the actual book wouldn't. Don't shoot, just an opinion.

Now that I'm done the series, which was brought to my attention by a movie, I have some pros and cons. The movie was quite simply a nice, uncomplicated affair with a great cast, including Godfrey Gap, Lena Headey, Collins, Rhys-meyers, Sheehan...the books however are a nice way to pass time, and are worth reading. I liked her supporting characters much more than the obvious main 4, comprised of Clary, Jace, Alex, and Isabelle. They, as stand alone, are often predictable, boorish, and a bit too "set". I don't include Simon with the "hot 4", because he's actually a breath of fresh air along with Magnus Bane, Raphael, Bat, Brother Zachariah, Jordan, Lucien, Maia, Lily etc. Whose characters I found to be more rich and developed. Having said that, that's actually what made me go on reading. The main 4 interacting with other characters listed above and a host of delightful villians especially Jonathan/Sebastian, Valentine, Maureen, Seelie Queen, and the bigger demons, Abbaddon, lillith etc. Made me want to go on. Add in the history of the Iron Sisters, The Silent Brothers, The Clave, and Downworlders, and thats entertainment for me. Some of the obvious technical problems I struggled with. Werewolves who apparently can change back and forth without the aid of a back-up wardrobe in a duffle bag, the obvious "jace and clary can't have a fictional relationship because (enter complicated problem here)" and a myriad of other things that I found tiring. However, I realize it's not high prose per se, but with a rich landscape, a fascinating back story, and a host of whimsical characters and a really great moral story to back up the main four, it passes the test. Its not A Song Of Fire And Ice, nor is it Lord of the Rings, Robert Langdon, Harry Potter, or anything Stephen King ever wrote where you actual feel actual tension/fear and a sense of urgency and compassion for the main characters. It didn't take me that far in until Magnus Bane, Simon, Lucien, or anyone else made decidely bold moves and potentially sacrificial moves, that's what got me and held me. I found myself caring about her supporting characters much more than the obvious focal two. I'm not sure what age range these are geared to though. The movie seemed to be a lot more intense, and no I haven't seen the t.v. show due to the variations from the plot and the cast (the only characters I can say they improved was Jace), so I really can't say either movie or the t.v. show follows these novels, they both seem loosely implied on the books. You should really read these books if you say, are only watching the show. Or if you've seen the one movie and want more story! Enjoy it for what is though and judge for yourself, constant reader.
