Word went round, as it always goesround in times like this, and just before sunset the whole nativepopulation was out to see the white man's method. No one hindered themor feared them, for apparently they had no hand in this uprising, andmoreover, were unarmed. They were full of curiosity to see what theyshould see. Silently they trooped out in hundreds through the shady, palm bordered, red streets of the town, padding barefoot past thesheltered bungalows, past the bronze statue of the Bishop, out to theedge of the town.
