This was the time... of day when the men were training, bashing each other’s heads in and calling it practice for the real fights later. I hated the sounds of fists on flesh, hated the grunts and the smells and the cursing. The unnaturalness of it all. So I stayed outside by the river where I could be alone. Where it was quiet and peaceful.
Or at least relatively so.
Because for only the second time since I’d been coming out here, I heard footsteps approach.
