In considering the power of man to modify the climate of LECT. IV.] Climate affected by cutting doivn Timber. 105 the country in which he resides, it may be observed, that the quantity of rain which falls in a particular district seems to be often affected by the cutting down of its forests, and like- wise that the water which the soil receives from the hea- vens will be got rid of more rapidly after a clearage of its timber. Trees will naturally arrest in their progress the clouds and mists wh...ich sweep over the country, and cause them to deposit their moisture upon them, whilst at the same time evaporation from the surface will go on more rapidly, when the wind has a free circulation, than when the ground is protected from it by wood. Of the extent to which these causes operate, Boussingault has given a striking example, in his account of the change produced in the climate of Venezuela by the cutting down of the forests, in regard to the fall of rain, and the humidity of the district.
