" Main Seam, " may have amounted to 250 ft. Though the coal-seams share to a considerable extent in the variability of the measures, the assumption of long periods of quiet and stability and a partial, if not entire, "growth in situ " origin, is supported by the per- sistence of a 12-inch seam of bright coal over a distance of 6 miles, and of an 1 8-inch layer of gas-coal at the base of the " Main Seam " over a still greater distance.
