E. Hull, F. R. S. , 1873. Q 2 228 COAL. CHAP VII. Parliament petitioned King Edward I. To prohibit the use of coal in London. The citizens were so offended at the ' sulferous smoke and savor of the firing ' that the King complied with their request, and the penalty for the use of coal was the destruction of the furnaces or kilns in which it had been used. We are also told that many years afterwards ( the nice dames of London would not come into any house or room where sea-coals were burned, nor... willingly eat of the meat that was either sod or roasted with sea-coal fire ; ' l and even so late as 1679 we learn that Mr. Locke, finding himself affected with an asthma, * could not tarry long at London, the sea-coal that is burnt there being so very offensive to him. ' 2 Such prejudices were rife in France up to a much later date. In 1714 the Parisians refused to allow coal to be used in Paris. In 1769 little more than a hundred years ago when wood was very dear in Paris, ' some English mer- chants conceived the idea of sending cargoes of coal from the English Collieries to supply the scarcity of fuel in France.
