Ed- ward Godfrey, gentleman, became then... the first governor of the province of Maine, the colonial contemporary of John Endicott of Massachusetts, William Bradford of Plymouth, John Haynes of Connecticut, and Theophilus Eaton of New Haven.
The election took place at the July term of the court in 1649, and for three successive terms he was chosen to be his own successor. His adminis- tration is not characterized by any noteworthy legislation, but the records show his terms to have been years of quietude and rest from the politiccJ agitations which had worried the planters hereto- fore.
