What reading level is Colonies And Colonial Federations book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The commercially important produce of these colonies consists of four principal articles — cane-sugar, tea, cocoa, and coffee; after these follow fruits and spices ; drugs, which now have but little economic importance, may be ranked in the same class. These products furnish more than half the exports of the tropical colonies, and sugar, the original basis of tropical colonisation, still holds the first place in tropical enterprise. The cultivation of the cane remains the sole mainstay of the o...riginal English West Indian islands (Barbados, St. Kitts, Antigua, and Nevis), by far the most im- portant one of Mauritius and Guiana, and is still an important industry in Trinidad and Jamaica, although in the latter island the enterprise of the planter is becoming mainly concentrated on fruit - production Ill ECONOMIC 151 (bananas and oranges) and in the former on cocoa. The sugar-cane is largely grown in Australia, especially in Queensland, which ranks next after Mauritius in pro- duction, and New South "Wales.
