The problem of an analytic description of the preference function is dealt with by ranking the issues. A main part of this system handles the representation of the utility function according to multi-attribute theory. The system has been used several times in public disputes. It was frequently observed that the final results, as suggested by the computer, did not necessarily coincide with the parties' subjective feelings and often the shape of the utility function changed dramatically during the negotiation -- a fact which points to the limits of the usefulness of the concept of utility when applied to real-life negotiations. -25- 13.
