Illustration — Plate 30 Robert Motherwell was reared in California, though born in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1915, and has lived in New York since 1940. An impressive amount of university training forms his background, none of it, however, concerned with the study of art. A graduate of Stanford University, he also attended Harvard and Columbia, studied in France, and lived for a time in Italy and Mexico. He has contributed to the New Republic, Partisan Review, and magazines on design: edited The... From 1940-1944 he was a member of the Parisian Surrealist group, but always as an abstract painter.
