I trust j^ou will have no difficulty in giving effect to these instructions ; but as there is no time to receive any answer from His Imperial Highness before the courier leaves, you will, I think, do well to pay only the balance, 4,500 taels, back to the Taoutae pending the arrival of such answer, and lodging the 1,500 taels in the Oriental Bank until the question is finally determined between the Prince and myself, stating in your vindication that such are your instructions.
