To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
She didn’t want to think of him but she couldn’t get him out of her mind even though she had not seen him since his marriage. It had been a relief to her when, instead of coming home on leave, he took Freda on a belated honeymoon to York, for it meant that she could get away from Aberdeen without having to see him with the girl who was now his wife. At the beginning of the third week of her initial training, she decided that enough was enough. If she was ever to get over him, she would have to t...ry to enjoy herself, to mix with boys. With this in mind, she went to a dance that night with some other WAAFs but, as the evening wore on, she found it became more and more difficult to keep smiling. Making the excuse of having to take an aspirin for a severe headache, she went to the cloakroom. On her own, she gave way to the tears which she had been holding back and let her thoughts turn to Neil again. When he asked her out for the first time, she had believed that he had been sent by God to compensate for taking her parents and grandparents away and it had helped her to bear the bitter grief that still attacked her in the night.
