Man is not merely a conscious automaton. For CREATIVE REVOLUTION 187 man has what matter, as such, lacks. Man has sensation. And, as Bergson rightly insists, the function of a sensation is to call upon us to make a choice between an automatic reaction and other movements possible to us.
