103 104 CROP PRODUCTION Hyacinths The common Hyacinth is derived from a species that originally grew wild in Syria and Asia Minor. It is called Hyacinthus orientalis or Oriental Hyacinth. Prac- tically all the bulbs are now grown in Holland, so it is generally called the Dutch Hyacinth. The bulbs are used largely for both out- door planting and indoor forcing. For the former purpose they should be put in the ground early in Oc- tober, with the bottom of the bulb six inches from the soil surface, so that the roots will have plenty of time to grow before freezing.
