During the reign of James I. The Englifh judges rode to Weftminfter on horf-back, and probably did fo for many years after his death. Charles I. Made his s public entry into London on horfeback, be- tween his two brothers, the Dukes of York and Gkmcefter. We We are told by Rufhworth, that in London, not above a hundred years ago, t...here were but twenty hackney-coaches; which did not ply on the ftreets, but were kept at home till called for. He adds, that the King and council published a proclama- tion againft them, becaufe they raifed the price of provender upon the King, nobility, and gentry. At prefent 1000 hackney-coaches ply in the ftreets of London. The firft coach with glafTes in France was brought from Bruflels to Paris, in the year 1660, by the prince of Conde. Sedan-chairs were not known in Eng- land before the year 1634.
