I rode back to the rear and secured an ambulance, and I appointed three private soldiers to go in that ambulance as judges of the election. I took an old camp kettle and put it in the ambu- lance to receive the ballots, and when we halted, as we used to do, about every eight miles, allowed the soldiers to vote. And we counted the votes that night by the light of a bivouac fire. Now, this was in the darkest period of the Civil War. It was only in the preceding August that Abra- ham Lincoln wrote a letter, and that letter is now in exist- ence, expressing the feeling that he was not going to be reelected.
